25/10/2022

Our Counsellor Mrs. Marissa del Rosario-Blackett delivered a statement at the 2022 UN Third Committee Conference on Friday, 21st October.

Mrs. del Rosario-Blackett intervened on the work done by the Special Rapporteur on the issue of human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment, Mr. David R. Boyd, bringing an example of the Order of Malta’s work to promote this type of environment:

“In Colombia, Malteser International Americas’ mangrove projects in Isla del Rosario and Tasajeras in northern Colombia, have provided carbon-capture ecosystems, coastal defense from rising sea levels; filtered pollution through their roots increasing water quality; and preserved a broad variety of species.  These mangroves have empowered women entrepreneurs and provided a sustainable source of income for communities including fisheries”

Mrs. del Rosario-Blackett also stressed:

“If we don’t act now our human rights will not only remain theoretical, we will each have a demonstrable hand  at the destruction of humanity.  Collectively we can make a difference and we must muster the will to tackle the challenges that we face. It is our duty to do so. Our future, our children’s future and the future of our fellow nationals are in our hands”.
