Ambassador Paul Beresford-Hill met with Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Uganda to the United Nations, on March 13th, 2024.

Ambassador Beresford-Hill gave Ambassador Ayebare an overview of the Sovereign Order of Malta’s history and its role as a global humanitarian actor. He also shared his insights into a visit from an Order of Malta delegation to Uganda in November 2023 (pictured below), which included Presidents from three different Associations, as well as representatives from Malteser International and the Grand Hospitaller.

The delegation’s activities in Uganda ranged from high-level discussions with Ugandan officials to visits to various humanitarian projects supported by the Order across the country. This included the Mapeera Bakateyamba Home, the Suubi Rehabilitation Centre, and the St. Michael Lubaga Training Institute, all in Kampala. The delegation also visited the Rhino Refugee Camp in northern Uganda, where refugees receive active support from Malteser International in the form of essential services, such as access to water, hygiene promotion, and agricultural support.

Ambassador Ayebare expressed interest and admiration for both the Order’s historical legacy, as well as his gratitude for the work it carries out in Uganda. Both Ambassadors were enthusiastic about exploring how collaboration in addressing Uganda’s health and humanitarian challenges could be further developed.
