On Monday, July 8th, 2024, Mr. Edward Raine, CEO of Food for the Poor, delivered a compelling address at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), focusing on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The HLPF, which brings together representatives from the public and private sector, is an annual conference that discusses the status of the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As one of the main events at this year’s HLPF, the meeting on SDG 17 explored strategies for building effective partnerships.
The ways that Food for the Poor, a leading American non-profit aid organization, and the Sovereign Order of Malta leverage each other’s strengths was described by Mr. Raine in his three-minute speech. He highlighted the unique strengths that each organization brings, such as the Sovereign Order of Malta’s deep community connections and Food for the Poor’s expansive operational aid network. He also alluded to the Order’s diplomatic status as a source of unique opportunity in negotiating with government bodies. Raine also underscored the crucial role of faith-based and community organizations in achieving sustainable development.
With over $15.7 billion in aid delivered by Food for the Poor since its founding in 1982, its partnership with the Sovereign Order of Malta has given it additional access to key areas around Latin America. The Catholic Church is a source of trust for many in Latin American countries and building relationships with religious leaders in communities creates creative options that increase the ability to travel and provide aid.
Mr. Raine concluded by describing the partnership between Food for the Poor and the Sovereign Order of Malta stating that, “It is a testament to the belief that by pooling our resources, expertise, and networks, we can tackle complex challenges with comprehensive solutions.”
The Permanent Observer Mission of the Sovereign Order of Malta thanks Mr. Raine for his statement to the HLPF and for exemplifying the spirit of SDG 17 through the impactful partnership between Food for the Poor and the Sovereign Order of Malta.
