On 4 March 2026, Deputy Permanent Observer Judge Brien Purcell Horan met with Ms Stenah Shampile, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Zambia in New York.
During the meeting, DPO Horan provided an overview of the Sovereign Order of Malta’s humanitarian mandate and its global activities, highlighting the Order’s medical and humanitarian work in Africa and the Middle East. He also outlined the Order’s engagement across sub-Saharan Africa, where it maintains diplomatic relations with numerous countries and supports a wide range of humanitarian initiatives.
DPR Shampile shared insights into Zambia’s current humanitarian priorities, including the ongoing impact of the severe drought of 2024, the effects of recent flooding that damaged key infrastructure, and broader challenges related to water access, sanitation, energy resilience, healthcare, and food security.
Both representatives discussed potential avenues for cooperation, particularly in the areas of medical and humanitarian assistance. The conversation also touched on broader developments in the global health landscape and opportunities for engagement within ongoing international initiatives.
The meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere and highlighted the shared interest of both sides in exploring closer cooperation in support of humanitarian and development priorities.
