Ambassador Beresford-Hill Meets with Fiji Permanent Representative, H.E. Tarakinikini, at the United Nations, New York

The meeting opened with Ambassador Tarakinikini outlining Fiji’s national priorities in climate action and sustainable development ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. He reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the 1.5°C global temperature goal, the phase-out of fossil fuels, and the advancement of credible Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The Ambassador highlighted Fiji’s pragmatic approach to climate policy and the pressing challenges faced by Pacific small island developing states, noting Fiji’s regional solidarity in supporting communities displaced by rising sea levels.

Ambassador Tarakinikini also provided an overview of Fiji’s domestic context, including efforts to diversify the economy, strengthen local industry, and address capacity gaps caused by skilled emigration. He noted ongoing work to improve healthcare services, including initiatives focused on child health and preventive care.

Ambassador Beresford-Hill commended Fiji’s leadership in climate and health resilience and outlined areas of potential collaboration with the Sovereign Order of Malta, including the Order’s “Doctor-to-Doctor” medical capacity-building initiative. He also highlighted the potential of medical tourism to contribute to sustainable development.

The discussion took place in a cordial and constructive spirit, reaffirming the shared commitment of Fiji and the Sovereign Order of Malta to advancing human dignity, resilience, and regional solidarity.
