On July 26, 2022, Ambassador Paul Beresford-Hill met with Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam of Eritrea to discuss cooperation across different areas within the work of the United Nations.

The Sovereign Order of Malta was one of the first States to recognize the State of Eritrea, establishing diplomatic relations in 1999, just 6 years after the declaration of its independence.

During the courtesy call, both ambassadors exchanged mutual views on issues such as youth, human trafficking and humanitarian activities. In addition, Ambassador Tesfamariam explained to Ambassador Beresford-Hill about her pride in having been Eritrea one of the co-sponsors of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, celebrated for the first time on June 24, 2022.
