30/10/2024

On October 30, 2024, Mr. Pablo Camprubí, First Secretary, delivered a statement at the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee on the topic of human rights in the Palestinian Territories.

Opening the session, Ms. Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories occupied since 1967 (as recognised by the majority of states in the international community), presented her report. She emphasised the severe risks facing civilians in Gaza, including people seeking food and safety, persons with disabilities, and humanitarian workers—even in designated humanitarian zones. Ms. Albanese cited estimates indicating that over 155,000 individuals have either been killed, injured, or remain trapped under rubble, including approximately 17,000 children and infants who have lost their lives.

She further highlighted the extensive destruction of infrastructure across Gaza, noting the abundance of rubble that has accumulated throughout the Strip. Ms. Albanese also raised concerns over reports of torture and sexual assault of detainees, widespread forced displacement, and the extremely limited access Gazan civilians have to basic necessities.

Turning her attention to the West Bank, Ms. Albanese reported an escalation of violence, noting that 735 Palestinian civilians, including 167 children, have been killed over the past year. She underscored abuse endured across the Palestinian territories, including instances of degradation, torture, and sexual violence against civilians.

In his statement, Mr. Camprubí addressed the severe humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian Territories, emphasising the urgent need for unobstructed humanitarian efforts. He drew attention to the Sovereign Order of Malta’s long-standing commitment to assisting civilians across the region, irrespective of religious, ethnic, social, or cultural background.

Mr. Camprubí spoke on the Order’s key initiatives including the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem, which offers extensive maternity and neonatal services, as well as those of its partners, such as the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group for ophthalmic care.

Mr. Camprubí also mentioned the Order’s recent aid deliveries to Gaza, conducted alongside the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, as part of ongoing efforts. He concluded by calling for the protection of the fundamental rights of vulnerable civilians, stressing that upholding these rights is essential to fostering peace, stability, and hope in the region.
