On Friday, July 19th, delegates gathered at the ECOSOC meeting to emphasize the vital role of care and support systems in advancing gender equality, human rights, and sustainable development.
Ambassador Beresford-Hill delivered a speech at the interactive panel discussion, noting that micro efforts are required to influence macro problems in care and support. In collaboration with the Venerable Order of St. John, the Sovereign Order of Malta is supporting volunteer ambulance services and first aid training. Over 2.2 million people have been trained in first aid, and nearly one million emergency calls were responded to last year. This collaboration exemplifies how targeted local efforts can significantly impact broader societal challenges.
Specifically, Ambassador Beresford-Hill underscored the critical role of education in these initiatives. By equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge, communities can become more resilient and self-sufficient. The Sovereign Order of Malta, in partnership with the Venerable Order of St. John, is developing an educational curriculum focused on first aid training and caregiving for middle school students. These educational efforts not only prepare the next generation of medical caregivers but also promote a sustainable and compassionate approach to community health and well-being.
Ambassador Beresford-Hill concluded his speech by quoting Pope Francis, “Be bearers of hope and builders of bridges,” embodying the spirit and mission of these collaborative efforts.
