On November 12th, 2024, Ambassador Paul Beresford-Hill met with Ambassador Filipo Tarakinikini, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Fiji to the United Nations.
Ambassador Tarakinikini is an experienced diplomat and former military officer with extensive expertise in security and peacekeeping. He has held numerous senior positions at the United Nations Department for Safety and Security (UNDSS), where he led inter-agency missions to conflict zones such as Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, and eight years of service in United Nations peacekeeping operations in southern Lebanon and Sinai in Egypt as part of the Fiji Military Forces.
Fiji, an island nation in the South Pacific, is renowned for its vibrant culture, pristine beaches, and diverse ecosystems. As a country highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, Fiji has been a global advocate for climate action, championing sustainable development and resilience-building initiatives. Its leadership in international climate negotiations, including its presidency of COP23, underscores its commitment to addressing the climate crisis. Additionally, Fiji actively participates in the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund Project, contributing to efforts aimed at fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development in vulnerable regions worldwide.
During the meeting, Ambassador Tarakinikini reflected on the discussions from the previous year, noting delays in diplomatic progress due to governmental changes in Fiji. Ambassador Beresford-Hill acknowledged these challenges and highlighted the Order’s growing engagement with Pacific Island nations, particularly in addressing issues of territorial sovereignty and humanitarian concerns.
Climate change was a central topic of discussion. Ambassador Tarakinikini recognised the significance of this issue and emphasised the importance of addressing the legal and humanitarian implications of rising sea levels and shifting borders.
The meeting concluded with both ambassadors expressing concerns over the exclusion of vulnerable communities despite the UN’s efforts to promote inclusivity. They also exchanged views on advancing collaboration between Fiji and the Sovereign Order of Malta.
