Following the signing of a Declaration of Intent on September 29, 2025, a subsequent meeting on November 10, 2025, took place between H.E. Paul Beresford-Hill, Permanent Observer of the Sovereign Order of Malta to the UN, and H.E. Dr. Mutryce Agatha Williams, Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis to the UN. The discussion was anchored in the recognition of deep historical ties that are set to underpin future humanitarian cooperation. Ambassador Beresford-Hill detailed the Order’s 900-year history and highlighted the unique historical link: St. Kitts and Nevis was a colony of the Order of Malta in the 17th century. He emphasized the Order’s singular, global mission to aid the sick and the poor, citing current activities in politically sensitive regions as proof of its ongoing commitment. This historical context established the foundation for the Order’s strong interest in engaging with the Caribbean region.
The primary objective of the meeting was to continue working towards the formalization of diplomatic ties, enabling the Order of Malta to expand its humanitarian work, particularly in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which face significant threats from climate change. The Order aims to complement existing government services by providing critical assistance. A key outcome was the Order’s willingness to increase its presence in the region and establish a working relationship with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) via St. Kitts and Nevis. This partnership would also facilitate more effective collaboration with its Anglican counterpart, the Order of St. John. Ultimately, both states reaffirmed their willingness to move forward decisively in establishing diplomatic relations.
