SOVEREIGN ORDER OF MALTA

Oct. 27th, 2021

Ms. Special Rapporteur, the Sovereign Order of Malta is a strong supporter of your mandate and is proud to champion the cause of combatting trafficking in persons and protecting the human rights of victims through the work of the Order and our worldwide relief agency, Malteser International. The Order has conducted multiple conferences in furtherance of this cause, such as: the 2018 conference on improving measures to combat human trafficking and the 2019 conference on ‘How better to fight sexual trafficking of women in West Africa and support their rehabilitation’.

Ms. Special Rapporteur, the Order of Malta echoes your call for states, international entities, organizations, and individuals to take on their positive obligations to prevent human trafficking, to enforce accountability for the perpetrators, and to provide aid to victims. Through local programs, the Order provides humanitarian aid to human trafficking victims. One example is the Bakhita Villa Centre in Nigeria, which offers protection and assistance to women who are victims of human trafficking. This center also provides for the identification of victims who wish to return from Italy.
