SOVEREIGN ORDER OF MALTA

Oct. 27th, 2021

The Sovereign Order of Malta is proud to champion the cause of human rights of internally displaced persons through the work of the Order and our worldwide relief agency, Malteser International. At the level of bilateral and multilateral relations, the Order has participated in conferences on this matter, such as the Consultation on Climate Crisis and Displacement or Migration. This event focused on discussing how the Church and religious institutions are addressing the challenges posed by the climate crisis and its effect on migration, as well as examining what action should be taken to respond more effectively to the growing needs of displaced populations.

Ms. Special Rapporteur, the Order of Malta echoes your call for the international community to collaborate with humanitarian actors, especially because we deliver humanitarian aid programs for internally displaced persons in several regions. Through many of these programs, we have provided shelter, food, basic items, medical supplies, hygiene articles, Covid-19 care packages, medical and psychological assistance, and even laptops for home schooling. In the camps and houses where displaced families are sheltered, the Order ensures that there is adequate sanitation and water supply. Furthermore, one of our most impressive programs is the ‘Ninewa Return Programme’, which: returns internally displaced persons to the Ninewa Plains in central Iraq; provides sustainable and dignified shelter through the reconstruction of war-damaged houses; enhances livelihoods and boosts economic development through cash grants and business development support; increases access to quality education for returning children via school rehabilitation and teacher training; and promotes social cohesion and peacebuilding.
