Ambassador Paul Beresford-Hill met with Ambassador Burhan Gafoor, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Singapore to the United Nations, on February 2nd, 2024.

Ambassador Beresford-Hill provided Ambassador Gafoor with a comprehensive overview of the Sovereign Order of Malta’s history and its multifaceted functions, from its roots as a political entity and religious order to its current role as a global humanitarian actor. Ambassador Gafoor expressed interest and admiration for the Order’s historical legacy, acknowledging its credibility in providing humanitarian services worldwide.

The core principles of the Sovereign Order of Malta’s diplomatic activities were emphasized by Ambassador Beresford-Hill, focusing on being a voice for the marginalized and underserved. In response, Ambassador Gafoor underscored Singapore’s emphasis on the vital importance for all states to uphold the UN Charter and International Humanitarian Law, highlighting their critical roles in fostering global development, peace, and security.

A pivotal aspect of the discussion revolved around the shared values of inclusivity and inter-faith harmony. Ambassador Beresford-Hill highlighted the Order’s commitment to providing care to all, irrespective of faith, race, or ethnicity. In alignment with this, Ambassador Gafoor spoke about Singapore’s rich religious diversity, expressing that the nation’s multi-faith fabric, shaped by various communities, serves as a testament to Singapore’s inclusive ethos.

Expressing admiration for Singapore’s leadership in the region, Ambassador Beresford-Hill touched upon the influential role of Singapore, and its significance in addressing global challenges.  Both ambassadors also emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with other states and international organizations within the UN sphere in New York.
