On Thursday, June 27th, 2024, Mrs. Marissa del Rosario Blackett, Counsellor, delivered a speech at this year’s Economic and Social Council’s Humanitarian Affairs Segment (ECOSOC HAS). The ECOSOC HAS is an annual forum where global leaders and stakeholders convene to discuss and coordinate efforts for improving humanitarian assistance. ECOSOC HAS 2024 focused on addressing the challenges posed by conflict, climate change, and ensuring respect for international law in humanitarian actions.

Counsellor Marissa addressed the Council by highlighting the Sovereign Order of Malta’s concerns about the humanitarian impact of international law violations, including attacks on infrastructure, conflict-induced hunger, and sexual violence, as detailed in the Secretary General’s annual report.

She emphasized the severe effects of natural disasters and climate change on humanitarian conditions, advocating for coordinated global responses to these challenges. Counsellor Marissa affirmed the Order’s commitment to aiding those affected through Malteser International, which delivers medical aid, psychosocial support, and essential supplies.

She detailed their work in Haiti and Ukraine, where they provide nutritional support and rebuild essential infrastructure, and noted their disaster response efforts in India, Bangladesh, and Kenya, helping millions affected by cyclones and floods.

Concluding, Counsellor Marissa urged for unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in conflict zones and compliance with international laws, highlighting the importance of multi-level partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian responses and support affected communities.
