{"id":160,"date":"2017-09-30T21:02:10","date_gmt":"2017-10-01T02:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unmissionny.smom.rc.77test.co.uk\/news\/the-72th-united-nations-general-assembly-session\/"},"modified":"2022-07-13T06:53:34","modified_gmt":"2022-07-13T11:53:34","slug":"the-72th-united-nations-general-assembly-session","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/news\/the-72th-united-nations-general-assembly-session\/","title":{"rendered":"The 72th United Nations General Assembly Session"},"featured_media":161,"menu_order":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-160","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry","news_categories-news"],"acf":{"focus_on":"no","breaking":"no","news_cover":{"id":161,"url":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/06\/UN-GA.jpg"},"news_content":"<p>On September 12, the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (GA) opened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k as president of the session.<\/p>\n<p>Laj\u010d\u00e1k, who assumed his presidency on September 12, previously served as a three-term Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia and held a number of senior roles in conflict prevention, resolution and mediation with the UN and the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the General Debate Mr. Laj\u010d\u00e1k outlined six priority themes for his tenure during his acceptance speech:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People<\/li>\n<li>Peace and Prevention\u00a0<em>(especially the importance of prevention and mediation in the maintenance of peace)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Migration<\/li>\n<li>Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/li>\n<li>Climate action<\/li>\n<li>Human rights\u00a0<em>(to which he specified that \u201crespect for basic rights and dignity of every human being (\u2026) is an overarching principle that must be reflected in everything we do.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The annual UN General Debate, during which Heads of State and Government and other high-level national representatives meet to present their views on major global issues, opened on Tuesday, 19 September, and concluded on Monday 25 September.<\/p>\n<p>Every year the General Debate focuses on a different main theme \u2013 although leaders are free to address any issue and often seize the opportunity to opine on international issues of their concern.During this year, the 72nd session of the GA (GA72) addressed the overall theme:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet\u2019,<\/em><\/p>\n<p>which GA President Laj\u010d\u00e1k chose with the intention to forge a UN fit for the 21st century and to bring the UN closer to the world&#8217;s citizen in order to make a real difference in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>UNGA72 marks the first time in 11 years, where all UN Member States and observers addressed the General Assembly during the General Debate. Some of the key issues addressed being:<\/p>\n<p>The Social Development Goals (SDG), the 2030 Agenda and human rights, exemplifying a recent increased focus on the relationship between the implementation of the SDGs, the prevention of human rights violations and strengthening the UN\u2019s response to emerging crises.<\/p>\n<p>In addition States drew particular attention to concerns regarding the rights of migrants and refugees, IDPs, gender equality and violence against women as well as climate change, terrorism, extreme poverty, and preventing violent extremism\/radicalisation.<\/p>\n<p>Other recurring themes in the statements included a noticeable country-specific focus as States repeatedly made references to: Myanmar, Syria, Libya, Venezuela, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, as well as the DPRK.<\/p>\n<p>In continuation of the event, the 72nd session of the General Assembly is likely to be focused on the themes of \u2013 preparations for the 2018 Inter-governmental Conference on International Migration and the proposed reforms of the Secretary-General, as well as the commitment to fulfill\u00a0the mandate to continue its work on Security Council Reform.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Committee chairs for the 72nd session<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) elected Mouayed Saleh (Iraq) as Chair.<\/p>\n<p>Second Committee (Economic and Financial) elected Sven J\u00fcrgenson (Estonia) as Chair.<\/p>\n<p>Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) elected Einar Gunnarsson (Iceland) as Chair.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) elected Rafael Dari\u00f3 Ram\u00edrez Carre\u00f1o (Venezuela) as Chair, while emphasizing that no aspect of his country\u2019s current political situation would prevent him from fulfilling his duty in that position.<\/p>\n<p>Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) elected Tommo Month\u00e9 (Cameroon) as Chair.<\/p>\n<p>Sixth Committee (Legal) elected Burhan Gafoor (Singapore) as Chair.<\/p>\n","news_gallery":"yes","news_gallery_elements":[{"id":162,"url":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/06\/fullsizeoutput_385f.jpg"}],"news_excerpt":"On September 12, the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly (GA) opened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York with Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k as president of the session.","evidence":"no"},"news_categories":[{"id":21,"name":"News","slug":"news","description":"","link":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/news-categories\/news\/"}],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/notizie\/160","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/notizie"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/notizie\/160\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/161"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=160"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
