All 193 Member States of the United Nations\u00a0are represented in this unique forum to discuss and work together on a wide array of international issues covered by the UN Charter, such as development, peace and security, international law, etc.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In September, all the Members meet in the General Assembly Hall in New York for the annual General Assembly session.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On September 17th, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly closed its 72nd\u00a0Session, which put the\u00a0theme &#8220;Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet\u201d, chosen by the president of the GA Miroslav\u00a0\u00a0Laj\u010d\u00e1k at the center of its works.<br \/>\nThe 73rd session\u00a0of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA73)\u00a0opened on the 18th of September 2018 with the overarching\u00a0theme:\u00a0 &#8220;Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies&#8221;. The first day of the high-level General Debate took place on Tuesday, 25 September 2018 and lasted until Monday 1 October.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This years session will be presided by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa Garc\u00e9s<\/a>, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister and\u00a0also the first woman to\u00a0serve within this capacity\u00a0from the Latin America and Caribbean region. She is also the first woman to be named Permanent Representative of Ecuador in New York, after having served as Ambassador in Geneva. Ms. Espinosa will be the fourth women to hold the position of General Assembly President within the history of the world body and the first since 2006.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She was introduced by\u00a0the UN\u00a0Secretary General, Antonio\u00a0Guterres,\u00a0as being an experienced diplomat and a politician who\u2019s \u201cdirect knowledge of the intergovernmental negotiations on human rights, indigenous women and climate change will help the General Assembly advance the agenda of the United Nations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">During President Espinosa\u2019s keynote address, she detailed her plans to bring about change to the GA \u201cby bringing the United Nations closer to the people.\u201d This would be accomplished through seven priorities that she indicated would shape this year\u2019s GA73 session. It included the promotion of:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gender Equality<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Protection of the Environment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Promoting and Implementing the New Global Compacts on Migration and Refugees<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Advocating for Decent Work<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rights of Person with Disabilities<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Support of the UN Reform Process<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Facilitation of Dialogue<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Additionally, she underscored that her priorities during the upcoming session would include the finalization of the Global Compact on Migration, and the implementation of the\u00a0Addis Ababa Agenda on financing for development.\u00a0Ms. Espinosa stated that during her presidency she would act as an \u201cimpartial, objective, and open facilitator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In her concluding remarks, Ms. Espinosa indicated that she would uphold good practices during her tenure at the GA by ensuring geographical representation, gender parity, and total transparency.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Committee chairs for the 73rd session<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">First Committee (Disarmament and International Security) :\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2015\/bio4745.doc.htm\">H.E.
