Ambassador Paul Beresford-Hill addressing the 11th emergency special session on Ukraine\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LffZ8kHC-Jk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>","news_content":"<p>During the Eleventh Emergency Special Session marking one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ambassador Beresford-Hill addressed the General Assembly, drawing attention to the stark contrasts that confront the international community if it were not possible to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>He reminded the delegates that a continuation of war, together with ongoing conflicts in 26 countries, \u00a0the impact of climate change and the natural disasters that have recently impacted Pakistan, Turkie and Syria, plus drought and water shortages throughout the world, are combining to set back the sustainability agenda in unprecedented ways.\u00a0 He contrasted the Secretary General\u2019s vision of a world order based on the UN Charter, highlighting peace, justice, human rights and solidarity, with a Hobbsian perspective of life that is \u2018cruel, brutish and short\u2019.\u00a0 He reminded the Assembly of Pope John XXIII\u2019s encyclical \u2018Pacem in Terris\u2019 and his admonition that \u2018we should recognize and support each other\u2019s rights\u2019 as essential to \u2018a well ordered society\u2019.\u00a0 \u2018The past twelve months\u2019, the Ambassador remarked, \u2018have seen a total breakdown in this social contract\u2019 along with a \u2018breakdown in the wider context of international civil discourse.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Ambassador referenced the work being done both in Ukraine, as well as along its borders, by the Sovereign Order of Malta as well as the contributions of the \u2018armies of humanitarian and aid agencies\u2019 in the region, while he called on nations that have not done so, to \u2018turn their swords into ploughshares\u2019 and use every means at their disposal to find a peaceful solution to the war so that the world can focus on healing and on sustainability.<\/p>\n","news_gallery":"no"},"news_categories":[{"id":21,"name":"News","slug":"news","description":"","link":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/news-categories\/news\/"},{"id":16,"name":"Statements","slug":"statements","description":"","link":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/news-categories\/statements\/"}],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/notizie\/1391","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/notizie"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/notizie\/1391\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/unmissionny.orderofmalta.int\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1391"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
